The Girl Who Came Back for the Waitress

Chapter 2: The Woman in the Blue Suit

The old waitress stared at the woman in the blue suit, unable to understand what was happening.

"Do I know you?" she asked.

The woman smiled gently. "You gave me dinner once."

The waitress frowned, searching her memory.

The woman reached into her handbag and took out an old photograph. It showed the diner from many years ago. In the corner of the picture was a small girl sitting in a booth, holding a fork with both hands.

The waitress covered her mouth.

"Oh my Lord," she whispered. "That was you?"

The woman nodded. "My name is Clara Bennett now. Back then, I don't think anyone cared what my name was."

The waitress's eyes filled with tears. "I cared."

"I know," Clara said. "That's why I'm here."

The waitress looked embarrassed. "Honey, I only gave you a plate of food."

"No," Clara said. "You gave me proof that I still mattered."

The waitress lowered her eyes.

Clara placed a folder on the table. Then she set down a silver key.

The waitress stared at them.

"What is this?"

"A contract," Clara said. "And the key to this diner."

The old woman laughed weakly, thinking she had misunderstood. "I don't own this place."

"You do now."

The waitress froze.

Clara explained that the diner had been in debt for years. The current owner wanted to sell it to a developer who planned to tear it down. Clara had bought it quietly that morning.

Then she changed the ownership papers.

The waitress shook her head. "I can't accept this."

"Yes, you can."

"I don't know how to run a business."

"You ran this place with kindness when no one else had any," Clara said. "That is exactly what it needs."

Before the waitress could answer, the kitchen door swung open.

The former clerk stepped out.

He was older now, heavier, and still wearing the same angry expression.

His eyes landed on Clara.

Then on the contract.

"What is going on here?" he demanded.

Clara turned slowly.

And for the first time, the old waitress saw her smile disappear.
