Chapter 2

At his engagement party, Adrian Whitmore stood beside his fiancée, Vanessa, smiling for the guests.

His three-year-old son, Leo, held his hand tightly.

Leo had not spoken clearly for over a year. After his mother disappeared, he became quiet. Doctors said it was trauma. Adrian had tried everything, but nothing worked.

Then, in the middle of the party, Leo suddenly let go of his hand.

He ran through the guests and rushed straight toward the new nanny, Eva.

Eva was standing near the wall in her gray uniform. She had only worked in the house for a few weeks. She was quiet, gentle, and always careful around Leo.

Leo crashed into her arms.

Then he said one word clearly.

"Mama!"

The whole room went silent.

Adrian froze.

Vanessa's face changed immediately. She walked toward Eva, angry and embarrassed.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa snapped.

Eva held Leo tightly, her face pale.

Before she could explain, Vanessa slapped her.

Eva fell to the floor. Leo screamed and wrapped his arms around her neck, crying, "Mama! Mama!"

Adrian rushed forward and pulled Vanessa back.

"Enough!" he said.

Vanessa pointed at Eva. "She is confusing your son! She should be removed from this house immediately!"

Eva looked up at Adrian. Her cheek was red, and her eyes were full of tears.

"I'm actually his..." she started.

But Vanessa cut her off. "Get her out!"

Two servants stepped forward.

As Eva struggled to stand, a small gold necklace slipped out from under her collar. Adrian saw the pendant hanging from it.

It was half of a broken heart.

His chest tightened.

He had the other half locked in his study.

It had belonged to Elena Hart, Leo's mother.

The woman everyone told him had abandoned him and died three years ago.

Eva looked at Adrian and said quietly, "If you want the truth, check Leo's birth certificate."

Then she was taken away.

Adrian stood there, holding his crying son.

For the first time, he wondered if everything he had been told about Leo's mother was a lie.

That night, Adrian could not sleep.

Leo refused to let go of the scarf Eva had dropped at the party. Every time someone tried to take it, he cried again.

Adrian sat beside his son's bed until Leo finally fell asleep.

Then he went to his study.

He opened a locked drawer and took out a small velvet box. Inside was the other half of the broken heart pendant.

He placed it on the desk.

There was no doubt.

Eva had been wearing the matching half.

Three years ago, Adrian had loved a woman named Elena Hart. She had worked as a music tutor in his family home. His mother, Margaret, never approved of her. Vanessa, who was already close to the family, always acted polite but cold around her.

Then Elena became pregnant.

Adrian was sent to London for urgent family business before the baby was born. When he returned, everything had changed.

His mother told him Elena had stolen jewelry, left the baby behind, and run away. Later, he was told she had died in a boating accident.

There was no body.

Only a bag and a ring found near the water.

At the time, Adrian believed it because he was exhausted, heartbroken, and surrounded by people telling him the same story.

Now he was no longer sure.

He went to the family records room and found Leo's birth certificate.

The father's name was Adrian Whitmore.

But the mother's name looked strange.

The ink was different from the rest of the document.
