He Offered a Million, Then the Boy Made Him Walk
Chapter 4: The Room Below the Institute
Julian left the restaurant with Oliver before Victoria could stop him.
For the first time in six years, he did not let his sister arrange the car, the doctor, or the explanation. He called his own driver and ordered him to take them to the Vale Rehabilitation Institute.
Oliver sat beside him, silent and tense.
"Is my mother there?" Julian asked.
Oliver nodded. "In the lower rooms."
Julian's hands tightened.
The Institute had been built after his accident. Victoria said it honored his recovery. He had donated millions, attended ceremonies, smiled in front of cameras, and praised the doctors who claimed to study nerve damage.
All those years, Marina may have been beneath it.
When they arrived, the front desk tried to stop him. Julian did not raise his voice. He simply said, "My name is on this building. Move."
No one argued after that.
Oliver led him to a service elevator.
"The lower rooms need a card," the boy said.
Julian took the security card from the nearest guard's belt before the man could react.
The elevator descended.
When the doors opened, the air changed.
No marble.
No flowers.
No public charity.
Just white walls, locked doors, and the smell of chemicals.
At the end of the hall, behind thick glass, Julian saw her.
Marina.
Older. Thinner. Lying in a hospital bed with wires attached to her arms.
For one moment, he could not move.
Then she turned her head.
Her eyes met his.
Her lips parted.
"Julian?"
The sound broke him.
He forced the door open with the guard's stolen card and entered.
Marina reached for Oliver first. He ran to her, climbing onto the bed and burying his face in her shoulder.
Julian stood beside them, shaking.
"I thought you left me," he said.
Marina's eyes filled. "I tried to come back. Victoria had me declared unstable. Then she took my research, my son, and my name."
"Why?"
Marina looked toward the monitors.
"Because your family discovered what my touch could do."
A voice came from the doorway.
Victoria stood there with two security men.
"And because miracles," she said, "are wasted on love."
