She Begged for Milk, Then He Tried to Take the Baby

Chapter 1: The Baby in Her Arms
Fifteen-year-old Ellie Parker had not planned to beg.
But the baby in her arms had been crying for nearly an hour, and the sound was starting to scrape against her nerves like broken glass. Her little brother had not eaten since the day before. The last can of formula at home was empty. Their kitchen cupboard held nothing but salt, tea bags, and one stale cracker she had already soaked in water and tried to feed him. He cried harder.
So she walked into Miller's Market with one hand around a carton of milk and the other arm wrapped tightly around the baby.
"Please," she said to the cashier, a tired man with a crooked tie. "My brother hasn't eaten since yesterday. I'm not stealing. I'll pay when I'm older."
The cashier stared at her, unsure whether to be angry or embarrassed. Before he answered, a man in a dark, expensive suit stepped closer.
Ellie had noticed him the moment she came in. Men like him did not come to stores like this unless they were lost. He was tall, clean-cut, and carried himself like someone used to being obeyed. At first his face showed only mild curiosity. Then his eyes landed on the baby, and something changed.
Not pity.
Recognition.
He crouched in front of her until they were eye level.
"What if I offer more than that?" he asked softly.
Ellie blinked, confused for one dangerous second.
Then the man's hand moved.
He did not reach for the milk.
He put one hand firmly against the baby and pulled back the worn blanket just enough to expose the child's shoulder.
Ellie jerked backward. "Don't touch him!"
But the man had already seen what he wanted.
A tiny crescent-shaped birthmark.
His face went white.
"My God," he whispered.
Ellie clutched the baby tighter and backed away. "Stay away from us."
The man's eyes lifted to hers, sharp now, almost desperate.
"That baby is not yours," he said. "And if his name is Noah, you are in more danger than you understand."
The milk slipped from Ellie's hand and burst open on the floor.
