The Woman They Tried to Bury Alive

Chapter 4: The Real Will

Henry raised the pistol.

Clara did not move.

She was terrified, but she held the key tightly in her fist. She had been invisible in this house for three years. She had polished their silver, washed their linens, carried their trays, and listened while they spoke as if servants had no ears.

That was their mistake.

She knew where the vault was.

And she knew the back passage behind the chapel.

Before Henry could fire, Rose screamed and threw herself at him. The pistol went off. The bullet struck the marble floor, and the guests scattered in panic.

Clara ran.

She slipped behind the altar curtain and pushed open the narrow servant door. Arthur shouted behind her. Footsteps followed.

The passage was dark, but Clara knew it by touch. Left at the broken brick. Down seven steps. Right toward the old wine cellar.

She reached the vault door with Arthur only seconds behind her.

"Open it," he ordered.

Clara put the key in the lock.

Arthur smiled. "Good girl."

Then she turned the key only halfway.

A hidden bell rang upstairs.

Arthur's smile vanished.

"What did you do?"

Clara stepped back. "Lady Evelyn told me once that if anyone opened the vault under threat, turn the key halfway. It alerts the village magistrate."

Arthur lunged for her.

Before he reached her, the vault door clicked open on its own.

Inside was not just a will.

There were letters.

Bank records.

Medical notes.

And a written confession from Evelyn, prepared in case of her sudden death.

Arthur stared at the papers.

Clara grabbed the top folder and ran back toward the chapel.

When she returned, Evelyn had been lifted from the coffin and laid on the floor. Rose held her hand.

Evelyn's eyes found Clara.

Clara knelt beside her.

"I found it," she said.

Evelyn's mouth moved.

This time, Clara heard her.

"Read it."
