My wife, Evelyn, had disappeared during a sailing accident.
Her boat was recovered.
Her body was not.
The family eventually declared her dead.
Anna's clinic had unknowingly located a woman with matching DNA in a nearby assisted living facility.
She lived under the name Evelyn Hart and suffered from memory loss following a head injury.
A scar beneath her wedding ring matched the one Evelyn received in our first year of marriage.
When Anna entered her room, Evelyn stared at her silently.
Then Anna opened the silver locket.
Recognition slowly returned to Evelyn's face.
"My baby," she whispered.
Anna collapsed into her mother's arms.
The reunion did not magically restore Evelyn's memory or cure Anna's illness.
But it gave both women something they had lost.
Hope.
Evelyn was a compatible donor. After careful medical evaluations, Anna received the treatment she needed.
Her recovery took months.
Maisie moved into my home with Anna, but I made no decisions for them without asking.
I learned that repairing a family required more than money.
It required patience.
Apologies.
And the humility to accept that forgiveness could not be demanded.
Veronica was convicted of fraud and interference with medical communications. The investigator she bribed testified against her.
At the next hotel banquet, Maisie entered wearing shoes, a yellow dress and the restored silver locket.
The guests who once stared at her now stood to welcome her.
I knelt beside her.
"Are you hungry?"
She smiled.
"Always."
"Then you will always have a place at my table."
Anna stood behind her, healthier and stronger.
Evelyn sat beside us, holding the photograph from the locket.
Our family was not the same as before.
It was more honest.
After dinner, Evelyn asked to examine the necklace again.
Her fingers found a hidden catch I had never noticed.
The back of the locket opened.
Inside was a second photograph.
It showed Evelyn holding two newborn babies.
Anna had not been born alone.
