The Poor Boy Brought a Millionaire's Baby Back

CHAPTER 2 — The Child Who Died for One Minute

The boy had no heartbeat for sixty-three seconds.

Then his heart restarted without medication.

He woke inside a hospital bed and immediately asked about the baby.

"He's alive," Claire told him.

The boy closed his eyes in relief.

His name was Elias Reed.

He lived at St. Anne's Children's Shelter and had disappeared during a hospital visit with several other children. He claimed he heard someone crying from inside the intensive care unit.

Nobody had been crying inside.

The baby was already dead.

William believed Elias had witnessed a rare medical recovery and imagined the rest.

Claire believed otherwise.

"What did you do to my son?" she asked.

"I called him."

"From where?"

"The quiet place."

Elias explained that when someone had only recently died, he could sometimes feel an echo beneath their silence.

If the echo remained, he could guide the person back.

But he could not heal injuries or cure disease.

He could only restart what had stopped.

"How many times have you done this?"

Elias looked toward the window.

"When I was four, I brought back a bird."

At six, he revived a neighbor's daughter who had drowned in a lake.

Afterward, people began calling him unnatural.

His father abandoned the family. His mother, Hannah, took Elias and moved from town to town.

Then she became sick.

"I tried to bring her back," Elias whispered. "But she was gone too far."

Before Claire could ask more, the door opened.

A tall man entered with two attorneys.

He introduced himself as Dr. Adrian Mercer, director of the Evergreen Institute for Exceptional Children.

Elias immediately hid behind Claire.

"Don't let him take me."

Mercer presented documents claiming his institute had legal authority over Elias's medical care.

"The boy suffers from dangerous delusions," he said. "He needs supervision."

William stood between Mercer and the child.

"Then why is he afraid of you?"

Mercer smiled.

"Because children fear the people who understand them."

Elias grabbed William's sleeve.

"He's lying. He knows I can bring people back—and he wants to sell me to the richest person who dies."
