CHAPTER 4 — The Son Who Testified Standing

Theo remained upright for only seven seconds.

Then Naomi helped him back into the wheelchair.

But everyone in the room had seen him stand.

Richard's claim of permanent paralysis began collapsing.

An emergency guardianship hearing was held inside the hospital. Richard accused Evelyn of manipulating Theo to regain control of the family company.

Evelyn presented the intercepted letters, the original scans and the dashboard recording.

Naomi testified about the medication.

Amara sat beside Theo.

Dr. Cole initially defended Richard. He claimed the treatment had been medically necessary.

Then prosecutors offered him limited protection in exchange for the truth.

Cole admitted Richard paid him to exaggerate Theo's injuries. Each time the boy regained strength, Cole prescribed a higher dose.

Richard stood.

"Everything I did protected my son!"

Theo looked at him.

"You didn't protect me. You needed me to be weak."

The judge removed Richard as guardian.

Police arrested him for attempted murder, fraud, child endangerment and conspiracy. Investigators also discovered that he had stolen millions from Theo's inheritance.

As Richard was led away, he looked at Amara.

"This family was fine until you appeared."

Theo answered before she could.

"No. She was the first person who told me I wasn't broken."

The court restored Evelyn's parental rights. She took control of the company until Theo reached adulthood.

But the medical battle was not finished.

Years of medication and inactivity had caused severe muscle loss. Theo's neurologist could not promise a complete recovery.

"He may always need assistance," the doctor warned.

Theo watched other children walking outside the rehabilitation room.

"What if I never get there?"

Amara sat beside him and held out her hand.

"Then I'll walk as slowly as you need."

Theo took it.

For the next six months, he trained every day.

Progress came in inches.

Then, during one session, his left leg suddenly stopped responding.

The neurologist ordered emergency tests.

The results would determine whether Theo's first steps had been temporary—or the beginning of his recovery.
