The Maid on the Floor Was His Millionaire Daughter

CHAPTER 5 -- Her Mother's House

The foreclosure was canceled before sunrise.

Security footage from the memorial proved Emily could not have signed the loan documents. Banking specialists confirmed that Victoria had copied her signature from an old trust form.

The house had never legally left Emily's ownership.

Victoria, her brother and Dr. Pierce were charged with fraud, conspiracy, identity theft and coercive abuse. Additional charges followed when investigators confirmed the plot involving Richard's medication.

Victoria eventually pleaded guilty.

She never apologized to Emily.

Instead, she claimed she had been treated unfairly because the Caldwells possessed more powerful lawyers.

Emily no longer needed her apology.

During the months that followed, Richard canceled his overseas assignments and stepped down from daily management of the company. He did not expect immediate forgiveness.

He attended counseling with Emily, answered every painful question and listened when she told him that love without attention could leave someone terribly unprotected.

One afternoon, Richard found her in the entrance hall.

The bucket was gone. Sunlight stretched across the polished marble.

"I keep remembering you on this floor," he said.

"So do I."

"I'm sorry."

Emily nodded.

"I know. But rebuilding trust takes longer than rebuilding accounts."

"I'll wait."

She opened her hand.

Inside was a new key to Caldwell House.

It was not an invitation for Richard to take control. It was proof that Emily was choosing to let him remain part of her life.

Together, they rehired the employees Victoria had dismissed. Emily converted the unused guest wing into temporary housing for women escaping financial and emotional abuse.

The first resident arrived carrying one suitcase and apologizing for needing help.

Emily met her at the door.

"You never have to apologize for surviving."

Above the entrance, she placed a small silver plaque bearing her mother's name.

Richard watched from the staircase as his daughter welcomed the woman inside--not as an heiress, a victim or a servant, but as the owner of her own future.

Victoria had forced Emily to her knees to convince her she possessed no power.

She had been wrong.

Emily rose from that marble floor--and made certain no frightened woman would ever kneel there again.
