CHAPTER 4 - Caroline's Final Confession

Caroline's recording continued.

She explained that she discovered the forged adoption papers during her cancer treatment. She confronted Evelyn and demanded that Sophie be found.

Evelyn refused.

She warned Caroline that exposing the adoption could cause the court to remove Emma from the only parents she knew.

Caroline became frightened.

But before her death, she created copies of every document and left Liam the recording.

"I loved Emma as my own," Caroline said. "But loving her does not give us the right to erase the woman who gave her life."

Sophie covered her mouth.

Caroline had never met her, yet she had fought to preserve the truth.

Evelyn dismissed the recording as the confused statement of a dying woman.

Liam turned toward his mother.

"You stole a child."

"I saved her."

"You bought her."

"I gave you the daughter you wanted!"

Liam's expression changed.

Emma was standing behind him.

She had heard everything.

"I wasn't something you could buy," the child said.

Evelyn's face softened.

"Emma, I did this because I love you."

"You made my mother think I was dead."

Evelyn reached for her, but Emma stepped behind Sophie.

The authorities reopened the adoption investigation. Evelyn attempted to portray Sophie as a threat, claiming she had entered Hartwell House under false pretenses.

She requested a restraining order.

The request forced all three adults into family court.

Liam testified first.

He admitted that he had unknowingly raised Emma through an illegal adoption. He asked the judge not to punish Sophie or separate Emma from either parent.

Sophie requested no money.

She asked only for the right to know her daughter.

The judge suspended Evelyn's contact with Emma and ordered an investigation into the Hartwell Foundation.

Then she addressed Liam and Sophie.

Because Sophie's parental rights had never legally been surrendered, the original adoption could be declared invalid.

Liam might lose his status as Emma's legal father.

Outside the courtroom, Sophie found him sitting alone.

"You raised her," she said. "I won't let anyone erase you."

"You were erased first."

Sophie placed Caroline's folder beside him.

"Then we make this right without doing the same thing to each other."

The judge returned with an unexpected proposal.

Emma would remain with Liam while Sophie entered a gradual reunification process.

But the arrangement required Sophie's voluntary consent to a new adoption recognizing Liam's parental rights.

Sophie took the document.

This time, no one would force her signature onto the page.
