They Called Her Crazy Until the Coffin Moved

CHAPTER 4 - The Funeral Vanessa Planned for Them All

Evelyn returned to Rosewood House two weeks later.

She used a wheelchair, but her mind was clear and her voice was strong.

Vanessa had called an emergency family meeting, hoping to convince the trustees that Evelyn was mentally unfit. She arrived with attorneys and presented the forged sale agreement.

Then the library doors opened.

Evelyn entered with Lily and Richard beside her.

Vanessa went pale.

"You should be resting."

"I rested inside the coffin you chose for me."

No one spoke.

Evelyn placed the authentic trust documents on the table. She explained that Rosewood House would eventually belong to Lily and could not be sold without independent approval.

Vanessa accused Lily of manipulating an elderly woman.

"That girl is unstable. She attacked a coffin with an ax."

"That girl saved my life," Evelyn replied.

Investigators presented the financial transfers, medical evidence and recordings from the study.

Dr. Harris had agreed to testify.

Vanessa's elegant composure disappeared.

"I gave this family everything!"

"You took my mother's money," Richard said. "You stole letters from my daughter and made me believe she hated everyone who tried to love her."

"I kept your life peaceful."

"No. You kept it quiet enough that I couldn't hear the people you were hurting."

Richard removed his wedding ring.

Their marriage was over.

Vanessa turned toward Evelyn.

"You never accepted me because I wasn't born into this family."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I welcomed you. What I refused to accept was your belief that caring for someone gave you the right to control her."

Police officers entered the library.

Vanessa was charged with fraud, elder abuse, falsifying medical documents and conspiracy.

As she was escorted away, Lily began trembling.

Evelyn took her hand.

"You were brave when every adult in the room told you that you were wrong."

"I almost gave up."

"But you didn't."

Richard knelt beside his daughter.

"I will spend as long as it takes earning back your trust."

Lily did not promise forgiveness.

She simply allowed him to hold her hand.

Before the trustees left, Evelyn canceled every transfer Vanessa had arranged.

Then she announced a new condition for the family estate.

No person would ever again control Rosewood House without Lily having a voice.
