His Dead Wife Was Raising Their Daughter
CHAPTER 4 - What a Father Must Earn
Victor was investigated for document fraud, coercion, and falsifying medical records.
The physician admitted accepting payment to create the certificates. He also revealed that Victor had ordered hospital staff to tell Emma that Alexander had died.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Still, Emma refused to let legal victory become the same thing as emotional healing.
Alexander met Lily slowly.
He helped her water flowers every Tuesday. He attended her school concert and sat in the back row because Emma was not ready for public questions.
When Lily called him Alexander, he answered.
When she accidentally called him Dad, he did not make her repeat it.
He understood that biology had made him her father, but patience would determine whether she trusted him as one.
Helen moved into a small apartment above the greenhouse. She opened her first personal bank account and began counseling after decades of financial control.
Some days, Emma was angry with her.
Other days, they shared coffee and spoke honestly.
"I cannot forgive you just because you finally told the truth," Emma said.
"I know," Helen replied. "I will keep telling it anyway."
Victor attempted to portray himself as a concerned grandfather. He accused Alexander of returning for the Laurent inheritance.
Emma stood beside Alexander at the hearing.
"He did not return for money. He returned because a little girl was honest when every adult around us had lied."
The court issued protective orders for Emma, Lily, and Helen. Victor lost control of the family trust and was required to repay the greenhouse funds he had withheld.
Afterward, Alexander gave Emma a sealed envelope.
Inside were annulment papers.
"If you want to end the marriage he stole from us, I will sign."
Emma looked at the documents.
"And if I don't?"
"Then we begin again only when you are ready."
She tore the papers in half.
It was not forgiveness.
It was permission for hope.
Later, Lily asked Alexander to help plant a rosebush.
When they finished, she pressed a muddy hand into his.
"Daddy," she said naturally, and Alexander turned away so she would not see him cry.
