They Threw Out the Man Who Saved Her

CHAPTER 1 - The Man at the Door
"Get him out of here, now!"
Two security guards dragged the elderly man toward the restaurant doors.
His worn olive coat looked painfully out of place among crystal glasses and white tablecloths. Guests stared as though poverty itself had interrupted their dinner.
Sophia dropped her fork.
"Dad, it's him! That's the man!"
Her father, Daniel, turned sharply.
"What are you talking about?"
Sophia stood, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"He saved my life! Please don't throw him out!"
The guards stopped.
Three months earlier, Sophia had fallen from a pedestrian bridge into the river. A homeless stranger jumped after her and held her above the freezing water until rescuers arrived.
He disappeared before the family learned his name.
Daniel hurried across the ballroom.
"Release him."
The old man turned toward Sophia. Recognition filled his brown eyes.
Then he reached into his coat and removed a worn photograph.
It showed Sophia standing beside her school gate.
Daniel's gratitude changed to alarm.
"Why do you have a photograph of my daughter?"
The man lowered his eyes.
"I wasn't following her."
Sophia's mother, Grace, approached. She had remained frozen beside the table, one hand covering her mouth.
The old man looked at her.
"Hello, Gracie."
No one had called her that since she was eighteen.
Grace stared at his weathered face and gray-brown hair.
"Samuel?"
The old man nodded.
Grace's knees weakened.
Daniel caught her arm.
"Who is he?"
Grace had spent seventeen years telling everyone her father had abandoned her after her mother's death. She believed he had chosen alcohol and the streets over his only child.
Samuel held out Sophia's photograph.
"Your aunt sent it to me before she died. I only wanted to see my granddaughter once."
Sophia looked between them.
"Mom, is he my grandpa?"
Grace could barely speak.
"Yes," she whispered. "The man who saved your life is the father I thought I had lost forever."
