CHAPTER 1 — The Stranger at Table Twelve

Elena had served thousands of customers at Rosewood House, but she had never seen anyone study a bowl of soup with such gratitude.

The poorly dressed man at Table Twelve looked cold, exhausted, and hungry. His green jacket was frayed, and rain had darkened the shoulders. When he quietly admitted he could not pay, Elena remembered something her late mother used to say.

"No decent person should have to earn the right to eat."

So she used the last of her tips to buy him dinner.

The man had barely lifted his spoon when Victor Langley, the restaurant manager, stormed across the dining room.

"What is this man doing here?"

Every conversation stopped.

Elena tried to explain, but Victor pointed toward the door.

"This restaurant is for respectable guests. Not people like him."

The stranger slowly removed his wool hat.

His expression changed.

The gratitude vanished, replaced by quiet authority.

"I am the owner of this restaurant."

Victor laughed.

Then the stranger removed his worn jacket, revealing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

"My name is Adrian Cole."

Victor's face drained of color.

Everyone in the city knew the Cole family. Adrian's widowed mother, Margaret, had built Rosewood House with her late husband forty years earlier. After his father's death, Adrian had allowed Victor, his cousin, to manage the restaurant while he handled the family's other businesses overseas.

That mistake had lasted three years.

Adrian stood.

"And you are fired."

Applause erupted, but Adrian raised one hand.

He had not come for applause.

Three longtime employees had recently resigned without explanation. His mother had received anonymous letters claiming older workers were being humiliated, underpaid, and forced out.

Adrian turned to Elena.

"How long has this been happening?"

Her eyes moved toward the kitchen.

Behind the service door, sixty-two-year-old dishwasher Rosa Alvarez was watching them with terror.

Before Elena could answer, Rosa shook her head desperately.

Then Victor whispered something only Adrian heard.

"If you open the payroll records, your mother loses everything."

And for the first time that evening, Adrian looked afraid.
