Pregnant, Humiliated, and Not Alone

CHAPTER 3 — The Paper Trail

Olivia did not cry.

That surprised even her.

Instead, she sat in her father's car while Marla spoke quietly on the phone and Daniel stood outside the window, watching the house as if it had insulted him personally. The black suitcase was now in the back of the SUV with her. Half the clothes were still tangled inside.

The baby kicked once, firm and sudden.

Olivia put both hands over her belly.

Daniel noticed. His expression softened for the first time that day. "I should have come sooner."

"You came when I needed you," she said.

It was true. He had not asked questions in front of Richard. He had simply come.

Marla returned and slid into the front seat with a new folder. "There are bank records too. Richard began moving money out of the joint account last month."

Olivia closed her eyes.

Not just betrayal. Planning.

Not just cruelty. Preparation.

And then Marla said the part that changed everything.

"One of the transfers went to Victoria's sister."

Olivia opened her eyes at once. "Why would he pay her?"

Marla turned in her seat. "Because Victoria's sister works at the prenatal clinic you used. She accessed your file."

Olivia went cold.

The clinic. The one Richard insisted she switch to. The one he had called "more convenient." The one where he had sat beside her during appointments and smiled like a proud husband.

Daniel's hand tightened on the steering wheel. "What file?"

Marla answered carefully. "Your last scan report was altered. Someone changed the notes before it reached you."

Olivia stared at her. "Changed how?"

"Enough to make a healthy pregnancy look risky."

The car was suddenly too small.

Olivia's breath caught. She thought of the way Richard had grown distant after that appointment, how he had started speaking to her as if she were fragile, inconvenient, already half-broken.

He had not feared for her.

He had used the lie.

A text came through on Olivia's phone.

Unknown number.

Do not trust the doctor. Meet me at St. Anne's tonight.

Below it was a name she knew.

Nurse Ellen.

Olivia looked up sharply. "Who is that?"

Marla's face hardened. "Apparently, someone who wants to tell the truth."

"My pregnancy was never the problem. The lie was."
