The Pocket Watch a Little Girl Brought to Dinner

CHAPTER 3 - The Hospital Bracelet

Claire could not move.

The bracelet lay in her palm like proof of a crime she had never imagined. Lily Winthrop. Her daughter's name. Her dead daughter's name.

Anna looked frightened now. "Is that bad?"

"No," Claire said too quickly. "No, sweetheart."

But her voice was breaking.

Elena had stepped back toward the doorway, as if she already regretted staying. Claire caught her wrist before she could slip away.

"Tell me the truth," Claire said. "Right now."

Elena shut her eyes. "Not here."

"Then where?"

"Tomorrow. Saint Brigid's, at nine. Come alone."

She pulled free and was gone into the night before Claire could ask another question.

The rest of the evening blurred. Claire left the dinner she had barely touched. She did not remember collecting her coat or ignoring the worried questions of the host. She only remembered the bracelet, cold against her skin, and Anna's small face watching her as if she were already part of a story too large for her to understand.

At home, Claire spread old boxes across the dining table. Photographs. Baby cards. A lock of pale hair tied with ribbon. All the things she had saved after Lily disappeared, all the things that had become relics of pain.

Then she found the one item she had not looked at in years: a note from the hospital, written in hurried ink the night Lily was born.

The nurse had made a mistake.

The baby had been moved.

Claire had never thought about that line twice. She had been too young in her grief, too exhausted by fear.

Now her hands shook as she read it again.

Moved where?

She barely slept. At dawn, she drove to Saint Brigid's with the watch in her coat pocket and the bracelet in her purse. The chapel was nearly empty, smelling of wax and old wood.

Elena waited in the front pew.

She looked like a woman who had carried a secret until it bent her spine.

"I didn't steal your daughter," she said before Claire could speak. "I tried to save her."

Claire sat slowly, afraid that if she stood another second she would collapse.

"Save her from whom?"

Elena took a long breath.

"From the man who paid to erase her."
