CHAPTER 4 - What Marlene Was Hiding

The next morning, Ethan returned to the airport before sunrise.

He had not slept. He had replayed everything: Marlene’s shock, Harold’s call, the letter, the old photograph. If his mother had trusted Harold, then Marlene’s hostility was not random.

He found her in the control office, speaking in a low voice to the airport operations manager.

When she saw Ethan, her face hardened. "You’re not supposed to be here."

"I want my personnel file."

"I don’t think so."

Harold was waiting behind him in the hallway.

"You lied to me," Ethan said to Marlene. "About the suspension. About everything."

Marlene’s mouth tightened. "I was trying to keep this airport stable."

"By firing people who help sick passengers?"

Harold stepped forward. "By hiding who I am?"

That made her flinch.

Ethan looked from one to the other. "What is going on?"

Harold answered first. "Marlene used to work for my foundation in Boston. Years ago, she handled private records. She knew Teresa Collins."

Ethan turned sharply. "You knew my mother?"

Marlene swallowed. For the first time, she seemed less cruel than terrified.

"She asked me to do something," Marlene said. "She begged me not to tell you until she was gone."

Harold’s eyes narrowed. "Tell him what?"

Marlene took a breath. "Teresa did not leave because of fear. She left because she found out Harold had another family."

Ethan stared.

Harold went pale. "No. That is not true."

"It is true," Marlene said. "And I have the letters to prove it."

She crossed to her desk drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope. On the front was Ethan’s name.

His mother’s name was written on the back.

Ethan did not touch it.

Harold reached for the envelope first, then stopped, as if he did not deserve it.

Marlene’s eyes filled with tears. "Teresa asked me to keep it safe until the day you were ready."

Ethan felt the floor tilt beneath him.

His father. His mother. A secret no one had been brave enough to speak.

And inside that envelope was the reason Marlene had spent years trying to keep Harold and Ethan apart.

The sealed envelope was addressed to Ethan from the one person he thought could never speak again.
