The Waitress, the Widower, and the Promise That Changed Both Their Lives
CHAPTER 2 - A NAME FROM THE PAST
Emily did not take her coat from the hook.
She did not move at all.
The woman who entered looked to be in her late fifties, with rain on her wool coat and the kind of posture that came from years of carrying bad news carefully. She crossed the room fast, ignoring everyone else.
"Arthur," she said.
The old man nodded once. "It's her, Helen."
Marjorie's expression shifted from anger to confusion. "What is this?"
Arthur turned toward Emily. Even seated again, he no longer seemed small. "First, no one is firing her."
Marjorie gave a dry laugh. "Excuse me?"
A second person entered behind Helen this time, a broad man in a maintenance uniform from the building next door. He handed Arthur a folder and said quietly, "You asked for the records, sir."
Sir.
Emily felt the room tilt.
Arthur opened the folder, then looked at Marjorie. "You leased this cafe six years ago from Fairchild Properties. My family owns the building."
Marjorie's color drained. "I... I didn't know."
"No," Arthur said. "But your books are about to explain a great deal."
Emily barely heard that part. She was staring at Helen, who had not taken her eyes off her face.
Helen stepped closer. "Emily, how old are you?"
Emily hesitated. "Twenty-four."
Helen swallowed hard. "And your mother's name?"
A chill moved through Emily. "Caroline Bennett."
Arthur closed his eyes for a moment, like a man hit by memory instead of surprise.
Helen let out a shaky breath. "My God."
Emily took a step back. "What is going on?"
Arthur looked at her with open grief now. "Twenty-four years ago, my daughter Caroline disappeared from our lives after a fight with me. She was pregnant."
Emily's fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.
"I never knew if the baby survived," he said. "Until I saw you."
Emily almost laughed from the sheer madness of it. "You think I'm your granddaughter because I gave you free coffee?"
Arthur reached into the old leather wallet and removed a faded photograph.
The young woman in it had Emily's eyes.
