A Broken Violin, a Lullaby, and a Secret She Buried

CHAPTER 1 - The Song at the Back Door
"Who taught you to play this song?"
Marianne Vale, sixty-one, had just stepped out of the city theater when the boy ran toward her.
Her guards moved fast, but the boy shouted over them.
"Please buy my violin. My Mom needs medicine."
Marianne was already halfway to the black sedan waiting at the curb. She had a concert to review, a schedule to keep.
Then the boy lifted the violin to his shoulder and drew the bow across the strings.
The sound was rough. Barely tuned. But the melody cut straight through her.
A lullaby.
One she had not heard in more than forty years.
Her hand froze on the car door.
"Who taught you to play this song?" she asked again, softer this time.
"My mother."
He looked scared now, as if he had done something wrong. Marianne stepped closer and took the violin from him. Her fingers found the carved words on the back.
For Evelyn - From Mom.
Her breath stopped.
"No... this is impossible."
The boy blinked at her, puzzled by her face. "My mom said her mom played it for her when she was little. She always remembers it."
Marianne backed away as if the instrument had burned her.
"Evelyn died five years ago," she whispered.
The boy frowned, trying to understand. Then he asked the question that shattered whatever was left of her calm.
"Then why did she tell me to call you Grandma?"
Marianne could not move. The violin slipped in her hands, and one string gave a thin, broken cry.
Inside the car, her driver was still waiting.
Outside, the boy held out one trembling hand.
And somewhere in the city darkness, her dead daughter's name had just come back to life.
