The Ring He Was Never Supposed to Wear
CHAPTER 4 - The Fire Nobody Buried
By the time Mara rushed back into the banquet hall, the music had stopped.
People stood in confused clusters. A glass had shattered near the dessert table. Two guests were arguing over a dropped purse. Vivian was nowhere in sight.
Thomas stayed at Mara's side, while Elena clung to his coat.
Mara's hands shook as she unfolded the note again. "Why would Vivian be involved?"
Thomas hesitated. "Because she knew where you lived. She knew your schedule. And she was there the night of the fire."
Mara felt her chest tighten. "No."
"I saw her," he said. "Outside the warehouse."
The room seemed to tilt. Mara had spent thirteen years believing she was the widow of a man she loved. Now every memory had cracks in it.
A hotel staff member approached, flustered. "Miss Ellison, there's a phone call for you in the back office. A woman says it's urgent."
Mara followed the staff member with Thomas and Elena close behind. On the desk lay an old red envelope, already opened.
Inside was a photocopy of a statement and a second page with a different name signed at the bottom.
Vivian Hart.
The statement described the fire as accidental.
The second page admitted it had been reported that way on purpose.
Mara sank into a chair. "She lied."
Thomas closed his eyes. "She said she was protecting you."
"From what?"
"From the man who wanted the property at the riverfront. From threats. From a debt I never told you about."
Mara looked up sharply. "What debt?"
Thomas reached into his inside pocket and took out the ring. Not the one from Elena's hand. Another, identical, worn smooth from years of use.
Forever Yours.
He held both rings in his palm.
"I gave one to Vivian," he said. "She said she'd keep it safe if anything happened. I thought she meant the business papers. I didn't know she meant my life too."
Mara remembered a detail from long ago. Vivian had once asked her, almost casually, whether Thomas wore his ring even to work.
At the time, she'd thought it was nothing.
Now it meant everything.
The office door opened.
Vivian stood there, breathless, with tears on her face and a folder clutched to her chest.
"I didn't let him die," she whispered.
Mara rose slowly. "Then tell me why I buried him."
Vivian's gaze went to Elena.
And that was when Mara understood the worst part.
Vivian was not looking at Thomas.
She was looking at the child.
"Mara, Elena is your granddaughter."
