CHAPTER 4 — The Widow Who Finally Asked Questions
Eleanor had been told that her first husband, Robert, died from a sudden heart attack twenty-eight years earlier.
Charles was Robert's business partner.
Six months after Robert's death, Charles became Eleanor's most dependable adviser. Two years later, she married him.
Now investigators reopened the old medical records.
Margaret discovered that Charles had pressured Eleanor to cremate Robert before a complete examination could be performed.
A retired nurse remembered Charles collecting Robert's medication on the morning he died.
There was not enough evidence to prove murder immediately.
But there was enough to reveal a pattern.
Charles isolated Eleanor after Robert's death, took control of her finances, separated her from old friends, and taught her to doubt every decision she made.
At sixty, Eleanor finally understood that she had not been weak.
She had been manipulated while grieving.
"I gave that man almost thirty years," she told Scott.
Scott took her hand.
"He stole years. He doesn't get the ones you still have."
Charles and Daniel were charged with fraud, conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, and financial exploitation. The investigation into the crash and Robert's death continued.
The hotel sale was canceled.
Eleanor restored the stolen pension money using Charles's seized assets and her own dividends. She also created an independent board led by retired employees rather than family members.
But Scott's recovery remained uncertain.
Doctors believed surgery might help him walk again, but the operation carried serious risks.
Scott refused at first.
"I already have Anna and Leo. I don't need to prove anything."
Anna knelt beside him.
"This isn't about proving you're strong. You proved that eight years ago."
Leo placed both matching watches on his father's blanket.
"Uncle Adrian said one is yours."
Scott closed his hand around the watches.
Adrian stood at the foot of the bed.
"I made you a promise. I failed."
"You were lied to."
"I also stopped asking questions when the answers became painful."
Scott looked at his younger brother.
Adrian did not ask for easy forgiveness.
He simply promised to remain, no matter what Scott decided.
Scott agreed to the surgery.
Before nurses took him away, he handed Adrian one watch.
"Keep it until I come back."
Hours passed.
Anna paced the waiting room. Eleanor prayed silently. Leo slept with his head against Adrian's shoulder.
Finally, the surgeon appeared.
"The operation is complete."
Anna stood.
"Can he walk?"
The doctor hesitated.
"We won't know until he wakes."
Scott opened his eyes the following morning.
He could feel his legs.
But when the therapist asked him to move his right foot, nothing happened.
Leo tried not to cry.
Scott looked at his son.
Then one toe moved.
Barely.
But enough.
The room filled with relieved laughter.
At that moment, Margaret entered carrying the final financial report.
Charles had stolen far more than pension money.
He had also changed Robert's will.
The original named both Scott and Adrian as equal heirs.
The forged version erased Scott completely.
Margaret placed the authentic will on Scott's bed.
Scott had returned not only to his family, but to the life Charles had stolen from him.
