His Daughter Was Breathing Inside the Coffin

CHAPTER 1 - The Boy Who Stopped the Burial

Nine-year-old Oliver came running through the cemetery as the priest finished the final prayer.

"Sir, don't bury your daughter!"

Two security guards caught him before he reached the white coffin.

Oliver fought against them. His clothes were soaked with rain and covered in mud.

"She isn't dead! She's in a coma!"

Rafael Alvarez turned from the coffin.

Two days earlier, he had found his eleven-year-old daughter, Clara, unresponsive in her bed. The family's private physician, Dr. Nathan Cole, examined her and declared that a congenital heart condition had caused her death.

Rafael had accepted the diagnosis because grief left him unable to think.

Now this unknown boy was shouting that Clara was alive.

"What nonsense are you shouting?" Rafael demanded.

Oliver pointed at Rafael's wife, Victoria.

"She gave Clara sleeping syrup."

Victoria's hand tightened around her umbrella.

"My wife would never hurt my child," Rafael said.

Oliver's eyes filled with tears.

"Look into my eyes, sir. The girl is alive."

Rafael turned toward Victoria.

She took one step back.

"He's lying. His mother was dismissed for stealing from us."

Oliver shook his head.

"My mother was fired because she found the medicine."

Victoria ordered the guards to remove him.

Rafael raised his hand.

"Stop."

Something in Oliver's voice made him look at the coffin differently.

He remembered Clara complaining that Victoria insisted she drink a bitter tonic before bed. He remembered his daughter saying the medicine made her dizzy.

Rafael had dismissed her concerns.

Victoria told him Clara was seeking attention because she resented their marriage.

Now hope and terror collided inside him.

"Open the coffin."

Victoria moved in front of him.

"You cannot disturb her body because of a filthy child's story."

Rafael pushed past her.

"I said open it!"

The funeral director reluctantly lifted the lid.

Clara lay beneath a white satin cover, surrounded by lilies. Her face was pale, but her skin did not have the lifeless gray tone Rafael expected.

He touched her cheek.

It was cold from the weather.

But it was not frozen.

Rafael pressed two fingers beneath her jaw.

For several terrible seconds, he felt nothing.

Then there was a faint beat.

Slow.

Weak.

But real.

"Call an ambulance!"

Victoria dropped her umbrella.

As paramedics lifted Clara from the coffin, one of them shouted that the girl was breathing.

Rafael turned toward his wife.

Victoria was running toward the cemetery gates.

Clara had been seconds away from burial, and the woman Rafael trusted most already knew she was alive.
