He Ran to the Waitress and Called Her Mommy
Chapter 4: The File They Buried
The doctor did not need to be forced.
One look at Edward's face, and Dr. Keller began talking.
He admitted Clara had survived the fire. He admitted he signed false death reports. He admitted Vivian brought Clara to the private hospital under another name.
"I was told she was dangerous," he said weakly.
Clara's voice hardened. "You knew I was a mother asking for her child."
The doctor lowered his head.
The kitchen boy gave Edward the file.
Inside were medical records, payment receipts, letters Clara had written, and photographs taken in the hospital. Edward's stomach twisted as he saw her thin face, bruised wrists, and desperate notes asking about Noah.
Every letter had been marked:
Undelivered by family request.
Edward turned to his mother.
"You read these?"
Margaret said nothing.
That was enough.
Noah began crying again. "Daddy, don't let Mommy go."
Edward knelt and pulled both Noah and Clara into his arms. He held them as if the ballroom had disappeared.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I should have found you."
Clara did not forgive him right away. Her body stayed stiff. Years of pain could not vanish because truth had finally arrived.
Then Vivian screamed.
"This changes nothing! You are already engaged to me. The announcement has been made. The contracts are signed."
Edward stood slowly.
"No."
Vivian stared at him.
"The engagement is over."
Margaret snapped, "Edward, think carefully."
"I am."
He turned to the guards. "Lock the doors. No one leaves until the police arrive."
Vivian's face twisted. She reached into her clutch and pulled out a small pistol.
Several guests screamed.
She aimed it at Clara.
"If I can't have your life," Vivian said, "neither can she."
Before Edward could move, Noah slipped from Clara's arms and ran between them.
"No!" Clara screamed.
A shot rang out.
