Don't Go to That Car
Chapter 2: The Child Who Ran Away
Alexander did not get into the car.
He crouched beside the girl, keeping his body between her and the fake driver.
"What is your name?" he asked.
"Lena."
"How did you know about my wife?"
Lena swallowed hard. "I heard her talking. She said you were getting too close to the truth."
"What truth?"
Lena looked toward the black car. "About the accident."
Alexander's body went still.
Five years ago, his first wife, Clara, had died in a car accident on a private road outside the city. At least, that was what the official report said. Alexander had been told she died instantly. Her body was badly burned. The funeral was closed. Everything had been handled before he could even think clearly.
The fake driver called from the curb, "Mr. Vale, we are running late."
Alexander ignored him.
Lena whispered, "He has a black device in his pocket. If he touches you with it, you'll fall asleep."
Alexander's eyes sharpened.
The driver took one step forward.
Alexander pressed the hidden security alarm under his watch.
The estate gates began to close.
The fake driver's face changed. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black device.
Alexander grabbed Lena and pulled her behind the stone pillar.
A sharp electric crack hit the gatepost, leaving a smoking mark on the iron.
Lena screamed.
Estate guards rushed out.
The fake driver jumped into the car, and the vehicle sped away before anyone could stop it.
Alexander held Lena until the car disappeared.
Then he turned toward the mansion.
Vanessa was standing at an upstairs window.
Watching.
When she saw Alexander looking back at her, she slowly stepped away from the glass.
Alexander's voice went quiet.
"Lena, where did you come from?"
The girl wiped her tears.
"The white house."
"Where is that?"
She looked up at him.
"Your wife knows."
