He Left the Altar to Save His First Love
Chapter 3: The Lie That Separated Them
Marco moved in front of the children.
The man introduced himself as Adrian Voss, legal adviser to the Bellini family. Marco knew the name. His father had trusted Voss for years with contracts, settlements, and problems that rich families preferred to make disappear.
Marco's stomach turned.
"What did my family do?" he asked.
Voss smiled politely. "Your family protected you."
"From Yolanda?"
"From scandal."
Marco wanted to hit him, but Sofia's hand was wrapped around his sleeve. He forced himself to stay still.
Voss continued, "Six years ago, Miss Reyes became inconvenient. Your father believed she wanted your money."
"She never cared about money."
"That was not what he was told."
Marco's voice turned cold. "By whom?"
Voss did not answer.
He did not have to.
Marco thought of Celeste standing at the altar, furious not because a child had interrupted the wedding, but because the past had walked in with proof.
Yolanda had vanished weeks before Marco planned to propose. His father said she had taken payment and left the country. Celeste had been there afterward, gentle, patient, always ready with the same painful sentence:
Some women love your name more than you.
Marco had believed it because heartbreak made pride easy.
Sofia pulled something from her small bag.
"My mom said to give you this if you came."
It was an old envelope.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
Every one addressed to Marco.
Every one unopened.
The first letter began:
Marco, your father took my passport. Celeste said you signed the papers. I don't believe her, but I have no way to reach you.
Marco's vision blurred.
Voss stepped closer. "Give me those."
Marco's face hardened.
"No."
Voss glanced toward the ICU room.
"Then I hope you understand. Without our private payment, Miss Reyes will be transferred out by morning."
Mateo whispered, "They always say that when Mom wakes up too much."
Marco looked at him.
"What do you mean, wakes up too much?"
Before the boy could answer, the ICU monitor suddenly flatlined.
