The Waitress in the Royal Ballroom

Chapter 5: The Dance After the Truth

By dawn, the palace had changed forever.

The regent was arrested in his private chamber before he could flee. Celeste was taken away under guard, still insisting she had saved the kingdom from weakness. Several noble families tried to deny everything until their names appeared in the late king's records.

The ballroom where Alina had served champagne became the place where the kingdom learned she was alive.

She stood before the guests no longer as Clara the waitress, but as Princess Alina, the heir they had buried in lies.

Many bowed.

Some did it out of loyalty.

Some did it out of fear.

Alina noticed the difference.

Matteo stood at the edge of the hall, injured but alive. He had spent ten years hiding her, feeding her, moving her from house to house whenever danger came too close. Now that the truth was public, he looked almost lost.

Alina crossed the room to him first.

"You said you were only the man who kept the crown alive," she said.

Matteo lowered his head.

She took his hand.

"You kept me alive."

Then she turned to Adrian.

He stood alone near the shattered champagne glasses, his face pale with shame.

"I am sorry," he said. "For my mother. For my house. For not seeing sooner."

Alina looked at him for a long moment.

"You were lied to too."

"That does not make me innocent."

"No," she said softly. "But it gives you a choice."

Three months later, Alina was publicly restored as crown princess.

Her first royal ball was held in the same golden hall.

This time, she did not wear a servant's uniform.

She wore white and gold.

The nobles waited to see whom she would choose for the opening dance.

Alina walked past every duke and lord.

She stopped in front of Adrian.

He looked surprised.

Then she smiled faintly and offered her hand.

"Will you dance with me?"

Adrian's eyes softened.

"Yes, Your Highness."

The music began.

No one laughed this time.
