"I'm so hungry."
The little boy sat alone beside a red brick wall, holding a cardboard sign that read PLEASE HELP.
People passed without looking at him.
His gray hoodie was dirty, his hands were cold, and his stomach had hurt for so long that he could barely remember what it felt like to be full.
"Please help me," he whispered.
Then a pair of red high heels stopped in front of him.
The boy slowly looked up.
A woman in a camel-colored coat stood there, watching him with gentle, worried eyes. She crouched beside him and pulled a piece of bread from her bag.
"Here, sweetheart. Take this."
The boy grabbed it with both hands.
"Thank you."
He began eating quickly.
"Slow down," the woman said. "You'll make yourself sick."
As she adjusted his torn collar, her fingers touched the silver chain around his neck.
A heart-shaped locket slipped out.
The woman froze.
"Where did you get this?"
The boy stepped back nervously. "I've always had it."
With shaking hands, she opened the locket.
Inside was an old photograph.
Her own face stared back at her.
She was holding a newborn baby.
The woman's breath disappeared.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked at the boy's eyes, his small nose, and the faint mark near his left ear.
A mark her missing baby had been born with.
"Oh, Alex!"
She pulled him into her arms and began to sob.
"I finally found you!"
The boy remained stiff against her shoulder.
Then he whispered the words that made her stop crying.
"My name isn't Alex."
The woman slowly released him.
"What did you say?"
The boy looked over her shoulder, suddenly afraid.
"The man who left me here said you'd call me that."
