He Knew His Father Was With the Bride

Chapter 5: Before the Vows

Richard Vale was charged with kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder.

But the truth did not end with his arrest.

Helena's letter named Adrian's biological father: Daniel Cross, a former Vale accountant who had tried to expose Richard nearly thirty years ago. Richard framed him for Helena's disappearance, then married Eleanor while Daniel was in prison.

Eleanor had been told Daniel abandoned her.

He had not.

He had written hundreds of letters.

Richard intercepted every one.

Daniel was released after the evidence was reviewed.

Adrian met him in a quiet prison hospital.

The man was thin, gray-haired, and nervous. When Adrian entered, Daniel stood slowly.

"You have your mother's eyes," he whispered.

Adrian did not know how to answer.

Twenty-eight stolen years could not be repaired in one meeting.

But he sat down.

That was the beginning.

The trial became the largest scandal the Vale family had ever faced. Camille testified. Margaret handed over decades of evidence. Eleanor spoke publicly, refusing to protect the name that had protected Richard.

Isabella stayed beside Adrian through it all.

Their wedding was delayed for six months.

This time, it was held in a small garden without reporters or wealthy guests. Camille stood beside Isabella. Eleanor sat in the front row with Daniel several seats away, both learning how to exist in the same story again.

Before the ceremony, Isabella found Adrian alone.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

Their engagement had begun as a trap. Every photograph, dinner, and public kiss had been part of a plan.

But somewhere inside the lie, something real had grown.

Adrian took her hand.

"The first wedding was for him," he said. "This one is for us."

At the altar, the priest asked if anyone objected.

Silence followed.

Adrian looked at Isabella and smiled.

No threats.

No hidden rooms.

No recording device.

Only her.

"I do," he said before the priest had even finished.

Everyone laughed through tears.

And when Adrian kissed his bride, Eleanor finally understood why he had said "Not yet" outside that door.

He had not been protecting the wedding.

He had been waiting for the truth to arrive first.
