Someone Is Taking Her Sight

Chapter 3: The Children in the White Room

The medicine test came back before midnight.

Rachel placed the report on the table.

"The drug damages visual processing while making routine scans appear normal. Someone designed it to look like a natural disease."

Daniel could barely speak.

"Can Emily recover?"

"Possibly. But she needs to stop taking it immediately."

Daniel looked through the glass wall of the clinic room. Emily was asleep with Noah sitting nearby. He had refused to leave her alone.

"Why would Vanessa do this to her?"

Rachel hesitated.

"Maybe Emily saw something."

The words stayed with Daniel.

Emily had started losing her sight shortly after wandering into Vanessa's private office. At the time, Vanessa said she found the child playing with papers and medicine samples.

Daniel had believed her.

Now he opened the cloud backup from the security cameras at home. Most footage from that day had been deleted, but one short clip remained.

Emily entered Vanessa's office.

Minutes later, Vanessa arrived with two men.

The men were carrying a sleeping child.

Daniel froze the image.

It was a girl about Noah's age.

Noah looked over his shoulder and gasped.

"That's Maya."

His missing friend.

The video showed Vanessa ordering the men to move Maya through a hidden door behind the bookcase. Then Emily stepped out from under the desk.

She had seen everything.

Vanessa noticed her.

The recording ended.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Emily had not become sick by chance. Vanessa had been silencing her slowly, counting on everyone believing a frightened child with fading vision was confused.

Noah pointed at the hidden door on the screen.

"That goes to the white room."

Daniel looked at him. "You've been inside my house?"

"No. But every charity house had one. White walls. No windows. That's where they tested the medicine."

Daniel called federal investigators, but Noah grabbed his sleeve.

"They'll move the children."

"Who?"

"Your wife has people everywhere."

At that moment, the clinic lights went out.

The emergency alarm did not activate.

Rachel reached for her phone.

No signal.

Footsteps sounded outside the locked door.

Daniel pulled Emily from the bed.

Noah whispered, "They found us."

Then Vanessa's voice came through the clinic speaker.

"Daniel, open the door. Our daughter needs her mother."
