The Nanny Was Not the Killer
Chapter 4: The Nanny's Secret
Richard did not get far.
A court officer stopped him at the mansion gates.
By evening, both Victoria and Richard were in custody, but Judge Hart refused to dismiss Emma's case until the full truth was clear.
The second recording exposed the frame-up, but it also revealed one more name.
Emma's.
Andrew had trusted her more than anyone, but the final part of the tape made every person in the courtroom look at her differently.
"Emma," Andrew said, "if Lily ever learns the truth, forgive me."
Emma went still.
Judge Hart looked at her. "Miss Hale, do you know what he meant?"
Emma's face lost color.
Victoria suddenly began to laugh.
"Oh, you never told them? How touching."
Emma held Lily closer.
The judge ordered Victoria to be silent, but the damage was done.
Lily looked up. "Emma?"
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
Emma could not answer.
Richard finally gave a statement after prosecutors offered him a deal. Years earlier, before Andrew married Victoria, he had loved a woman named Clara. Clara became pregnant, but Andrew's family forced her away because she was poor.
Clara died giving birth.
The baby was quietly placed in foster care.
That baby was Emma.
Lily stared at her nanny.
"You're my sister?"
Emma closed her eyes.
Half-sister.
Nanny.
Defendant.
All of it had been built on silence.
Andrew discovered the truth only a year before his death. He hired Emma to work in the house, hoping to know his lost daughter before telling the world. But Victoria found the old records first.
That was why Emma had been framed.
If Emma was recognized as Andrew's daughter, she could challenge Victoria's control of Lily's inheritance.
Lily stepped closer.
"Why didn't Daddy tell me?"
Emma knelt in front of her.
"Because he was afraid of losing you both."
Lily cried then.
Not like a witness.
Like a child whose whole world had been cracked open.
Then she wrapped both arms around Emma's neck.
"You didn't kill him," she whispered.
Emma held her tightly.
"No, sweetheart. I loved him too."
