The Fake Daughter at Dinner

Chapter 4: Victor's Last Dinner

Victor Winslow arrived before dessert.

He entered with two lawyers and the confidence of a man who believed money could rearrange truth. He smiled at Margaret, ignored Natalie, and looked at Clara like a stain on the carpet.

"I heard there was some confusion."

Margaret stood beside Clara now, one hand locked around her daughter's fingers.

"No confusion."

Victor's smile remained. "Margaret, grief makes people vulnerable."

Clara stepped forward. "So does guilt."

His eyes sharpened.

"You should have stayed hidden."

The room went cold.

Margaret turned to him. "You admit you know her?"

Victor laughed softly. "I know many desperate girls."

Clara nodded to the butler.

The lights dimmed.

A screen descended at the far wall.

Victor's smile faded.

Clara had not spent six months inside the Winslow estate only serving soup and polishing silver. She had searched study drawers, copied documents, followed old staff tunnels, and recorded conversations through the vents of the blue drawing room.

The first video appeared.

Victor's voice filled the dining room.

"Keep the real one medicated until the impostor is legally recognized. Once Margaret signs the trust amendment, we move the maid overseas."

Natalie sobbed.

Victor looked at her with pure hatred.

"You fool."

Clara turned to Natalie. "Tell them the rest."

Natalie shook her head.

Victor took a step toward her.

Margaret snapped, "Do not move."

For the first time, Victor hesitated.

Natalie collapsed into a chair.

"He said I would go to prison if I backed out. He said Clara would disappear again. I didn't want to hurt anyone at first. I just needed money."

Margaret's face was stone.

"You sat at my table and called me Mother."

Natalie cried harder.

"I know."

Clara did not look satisfied. She looked tired.

Then the police entered from the side hall.

Victor tried to call his lawyers, but Margaret had already given the recordings to the family solicitor before dinner began.

He turned to Clara.

"You think this makes you a Winslow?"

Clara met his eyes.

"No. Surviving you did."

Victor was arrested beneath the chandelier he had once planned to inherit.

Margaret did not watch him leave.

She was looking only at her daughter.
