The Dead Wife's Secret

The Dead Wife's Secret

Chapter 1: The Button In Her Hand

Everyone believed Emily Carter died in a tragic accident.

The funeral was supposed to be the final goodbye.

For Captain Daniel Carter, it was the hardest moment of his life.

After twenty years in the military, Daniel had faced danger, loss, and impossible missions.

He had stood in front of enemies without fear.

But nothing prepared him for standing beside his wife's coffin.

Emily was the one person who made his life feel peaceful.

The one person who waited for him after every dangerous mission.

The one person who believed in him when the world only saw a soldier.

Now she was gone.

Daniel knelt beside the coffin, unable to accept what he was seeing.

His military uniform was perfectly pressed.

His medals reflected the soft light from the church windows.

But none of that mattered.

He was not a decorated officer at that moment.

He was just a husband who lost the woman he loved.

Slowly, he reached inside the coffin and held Emily's hand.

Her fingers were cold.

But something felt wrong.

Daniel froze.

Emily's hand was tightly closed.

Almost like she was holding something before she died.

"Daniel..."

A woman's voice came from behind him.

It was Emily's mother.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Please..."

"Don't disturb her."

But Daniel ignored the warning.

Something inside him told him not to stop.

Carefully, he opened Emily's fingers.

And then he saw it.

A small military button.

Dark gray.

With a torn piece of thread attached.

Daniel's breathing stopped.

Because he recognized it.

It was not from his uniform.

It belonged to another soldier.

His eyes slowly moved across the church.

Searching.

Looking for an answer.

Then he saw him.

Lieutenant Adrian Blake.

A young officer standing near the wooden seats.

Perfect blond hair.

Cold blue eyes.

A confident smile.

But Daniel noticed something else.

A fresh scratch on Adrian's neck.

A missing button on his gray military jacket.

And a broken thread near the collar.

The same thread.

Daniel stood up.

The pain inside him changed.

The sadness became anger.

Adrian noticed his expression.

But instead of fear, he smiled.

A small arrogant smile.

"Don't make a scene."

The words were quiet.

Almost a warning.

Daniel stared at him.

The man standing across from him was the last person to see Emily alive.

And now he was holding the evidence that proved it.

Adrian's confidence lasted only a few seconds.

Because Daniel took one step forward.

And Adrian finally understood.

The grieving husband was gone.

The soldier had returned.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

His face turned pale.

His eyes widened.

Because he knew one thing.

It was too late.
