The Lie Her Mother Made Her Carry

CHAPTER 1 - THE PARK

"Come on, one more try. I'm right here with you."

The boy's voice carried across the cold little corner of the community park.

Daniel Mercer had been smiling when he turned onto the shaded path. He had left work early to surprise his daughter. For once, he thought, he might catch Emily before her afternoon therapy ended and take her for hot chocolate.

Then he saw her.

Emily sat in her wheelchair under the gray sky, her pale green floral dress bright against the dark mood of the day. A heavy blanket covered her legs. In front of her, a boy in a yellow T-shirt crouched low, gripping her arms as if he were holding up something fragile and sacred.

Daniel slowed.

The metal of the wheelchair flashed cold in the weak light.

Emily bit her lip so hard he thought she might draw blood. Then she grabbed the boy's wrist and pulled him close.

"Shh. Don't tell everyone," she whispered, her small voice shaking. "Mommy told me I have to pretend I can't walk."

Daniel stopped behind a tree.

For one strange second, his mind refused to understand the words.

Then the boy helped Emily rise.

Her knees trembled. Her fingers clung to his shoulders. But she stood. On her own two legs. In the sand.

"Look," the boy said, breathless with joy. "You are standing."

Daniel felt the air leave his body.

For two years he had carried her into hospitals. Sat through tests. Signed insurance forms. Watched specialists shrug. Held her while she cried in the night.

Now his daughter was standing in a park, terrified of being seen.

"Pretend..." he whispered before he could stop himself. "She can't walk...?"

Emily turned.

The color drained from her face.

The boy in yellow spun around too, startled.

And from the path behind Daniel came another voice, sharp and unsteady.

"Daniel," his wife said. "What exactly are you doing here?"
