CHAPTER 4 - WHAT SHE RAN FROM
The children's hospital smelled like sanitizer and old fear.
Daniel sat beside Sophie the next morning while a nurse wrapped a cartoon band around her arm. The little girl watched him solemnly.
"Are you my dad?" she asked.
No one had prepared him for the simplicity of it.
He glanced at Emily. She stood by the window, pale and rigid, as if she expected judgment from the glass itself.
Daniel answered the only way he could. "I might be."
Sophie considered that. "Okay."
Then she held out her other hand to him during the blood draw.
He took it.
The silver moon charm on her backpack rested against his wrist. He remembered fastening that charm around Emily's neck on their tenth anniversary, joking that she always made him believe in impossible things.
By afternoon, the test confirmed it. Daniel was Sophie's biological father.
He should have felt only joy. Instead, grief kept cutting through it. Six lost years. First steps. Fevers. Bedtime stories. Christmas mornings.
In the family room, Emily finally told him the part she had hidden even in the park.
After the crash, Harold had not only declared her dead. He had moved her and the baby to another state under his housekeeper's maiden name. Anna Cole. He paid the bills, controlled the addresses, chose the doctors, and reminded her that one wrong move could put Daniel in danger.
"Why didn't you leave when Sophie was older?" Daniel asked.
She opened her wallet with unsteady hands and showed him a photo he had not expected.
It was Daniel at his wife's graveside ten years earlier, taken from far away.
"I did go back once," she whispered. "I saw you there with flowers. Claire was with you. She told me you'd started drinking again after my death. She said if I came back then, you would break for good. So I stayed away until I knew you were steady."
He flinched. He had been sober for eight years now. But once, Claire had found him at his worst.
"Claire knew?"
Emily nodded.
Before Daniel could answer, a doctor entered with new urgency.
Sophie wasn't just a match candidate issue.
Her counts had dropped overnight.
She needed treatment immediately, and there was one more complication.
Because of an old emergency transfusion after her premature birth, there was a second inconsistency in her records.
The doctor looked directly at Emily.
"We need to know who signed the original hospital forms under the name Anna Cole."
