The Porsche, the Necklace, and the Name She Feared
CHAPTER 4 - THE CONFESSION
Father Tomas was smaller than Nico expected.
Age had bent his shoulders, but not his voice.
He stood beside the parking sign while the last sunlight slid across the plaza and said, "Your mother came to me before she left this city. She was pregnant, terrified, and certain Rafael would ruin her if she stayed."
Marisol pressed both hands to the Porsche as if she needed the cold metal to hold her up.
Elena did not interrupt.
Neither did Nico.
"Rafael was engaged to another woman then," Father Tomas continued. "A marriage that would protect his family's name. But he was also involved with Sofia Vale." He looked at Nico. "Your mother."
Nico's chest tightened at her name.
"She discovered he had taken the necklace and forged papers involving money from her aunt's estate. When she confronted him, he threatened to say she stole from him. He said no one would believe a pregnant seamstress over a rich man's son."
Marisol shut her eyes.
"No," she whispered. "No, my father wouldn't do that."
Father Tomas reached into his coat and removed an envelope. The paper was old, the corners softened by time.
"Your mother gave me this," he said to Nico. "She asked me to keep it until Rafael was dead or until the truth could no longer be avoided."
Nico took it with both hands.
Inside was a letter.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed his mother, very young, standing beside Rafael Ortega.
Rafael's arm was around her waist.
On the back, in fading ink, were the words: To our son, if I cannot stay.
Marisol made a broken sound. "Our son?"
Father Tomas looked at her with compassion, not judgment. "Your father knew Nico was his child."
The parking lot went still in a different way now.
Not dramatic.
Devastating.
Nico felt the years of silence reorder themselves inside him. Every missing answer. Every closed door. Every warning from his mother.
Marisol stared at him as if she were seeing the man in the white shirt for the first time.
Not a delivery driver.
Not a stranger.
Her father's first son.
Then her phone rang again.
Rafael.
This time Nico held out his hand.
"Put him on speaker."
