Why the Girl Hid Under Table Seven

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT HER MOTHER SAID

The diner went quiet in a different way then.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The kind that comes when grief walks in and sits down at the table with everyone.

Lucy's grandmother introduced herself as Margaret Bell. She was sixty-eight, from Wichita. She had taken Lucy on the road because they were heading to a family court hearing in Amarillo.

The man in the blue shirt was Daniel Serra, Lucy's biological father.

That truth hit me harder than if he'd been a stranger.

Lucy had been right.

He was not her dad in the only way that mattered.

Margaret pressed the fresh bandage on her hand and explained between breaths. Daniel had lost all visitation after years of drinking, violence, and disappearing for months at a time. Lucy's mother, Anna, had kept records. Photos. Hospital notes. Voice messages.

"She died in hospice in February," Margaret said. "Cancer. But before she passed, she made a recording for the judge, in case Daniel came back demanding custody."

Daniel, sitting handcuffed near the counter, finally spoke. "She poisoned that child against me."

Lucy flinched.

I looked at him and saw something I had seen before in interrogation rooms. Not simple cruelty. Entitlement. The belief that wanting someone was the same as loving them.

Margaret opened her purse with trembling hands. "The recording was in here."

Her face drained.

The deputy checked the bag. Wallet. Tissues. Medication bottle. No flash drive.

Daniel smiled then. Small. Ugly.

He had grabbed Margaret at the rest stop not just for Lucy.

He had taken the recording.

Lucy stared at him, then suddenly whispered, "No, he didn't."

She slipped a hand inside the front pocket of her forest green hoodie and pulled out a tiny pink flash drive.

"My mama said if I was ever scared, keep important things close to my heart."

Margaret broke down crying.

And Daniel surged to his feet so violently that even handcuffed, he knocked his chair backward and shouted, "That belongs to me!"
