The Lie Between a Mother and a daughter

CHAPTER 4 - THE LETTER

Daniel opened the envelope with shaking fingers.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper covered in careful block letters. Some words were backward. Some were misspelled.

But the meaning was clear.

Daddy,

I wanted to show you I can do it. Mommy said not yet because if you know I am better everything will change and she will be alone again. I don't want Mommy alone. I don't want you gone. I practiced with Malik because he is nice and does not laugh when I shake. Please don't be mad. Love, Lily

Daniel read it twice.

Then a third time.

The room blurred.

The thick blanket from the wheelchair lay across the other chair like evidence. He could not stop looking at it. Three years of fear. Three years of pity. Three years of arranging life around loss. And under it all, a small girl trying to keep two adults from breaking apart.

Catherine sat with her face in her hands.

"I was scared," she said. "After Owen was born, after Lily got sick, after you started sleeping in hotels more than at home... I felt myself disappearing. Everyone asked about Lily. Nobody asked if I was all right. When she first stood between the sofa and the coffee table, I panicked. I thought if the crisis ended, I would have to admit what our marriage had become."

Daniel wanted to rage at her.

Part of him did.

But another part saw the exhausted woman who had been living inside a locked room of her own making.

"Fear explains it," he said. "It doesn't excuse it."

She nodded through tears.

Dr. Feldman recommended a child psychologist, a full new evaluation, and immediate reporting to social services. Not to destroy the family, he said, but to protect Lily.

Daniel signed the papers.

Catherine didn't protest.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway with a juice box in one hand. "Daddy," she asked softly, "are we still a family?"

Daniel went to her at once and knelt.

"We tell the truth now. That's how we stay one."

Lily reached for him.

Behind her, a woman from Child Protective Services stepped into the hall and said, "Mr. Mercer, I need to ask your daughter a few questions. And I need to know whether she has an aunt named Sarah Bennett."

Daniel froze.

Sarah was his sister.

They had not spoken in eleven years.
