The Hospital Bracelet My Family Hid for Years

CHAPTER 1 - The Blanket in the Attic
After my aunt died, we cleaned out her attic and found a baby blanket stitched with my last name.
I was standing in the dust and heat, holding it by one corner, when I noticed the fabric was older than it should have been. The stitching was uneven, but careful. Someone had loved it enough to mend it by hand.
My cousin Mara went completely pale.
She was older than me by three years and usually had a sharp word ready for everything. Not this time. She stared at the blanket like it had risen from the floorboards itself.
Hidden inside the folds was a hospital bracelet.
My fingers trembled as I turned it over. My name was not on it. Just a date.
The same day I was born.
I looked at Grandma.
She had come up the attic stairs slowly, one hand on the rail, her breathing thin and dry. When she saw the bracelet, her face changed. All the color drained from her cheeks.
There were tears in her eyes before she even spoke.
"There were supposed to be two of you."
The words hit the attic like a dropped plate.
Mara let out a broken sound. "Grandma, don't."
But Grandma was already crying, her hand pressed to her mouth. I felt the room tilt under me.
"Two of who?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then my uncle stepped into the doorway and said, "Don't tell her what happened to the other baby yet..."
I turned so fast I nearly dropped the bracelet.
My uncle was still in his work shirt, face gray with shock, like he had been rushing to stop something. He looked at Grandma. Then at Mara. Then at me.
"What other baby?" I asked.
No one moved.
The attic seemed to shrink around us. The blanket was suddenly heavy in my hands, no longer soft, but strange and accusing. My last name stitched into it. A hospital bracelet hidden inside.
And my family acting like they had all agreed to bury the same secret.
