Fired for Saving a Stranger at Gate 12

CHAPTER 1 - THE FALL AT SUNSET
The old man dropped just as the sunset turned the airport floor to gold.
One second he was walking past Gate 12 in an old brown jacket, shoulders bent, one hand dragging a worn carry-on.
The next, he clutched his chest and crumpled hard onto the marble.
Daniel Reyes shoved his cleaning cart aside and ran.
He didn't think. He never had to think when someone needed help.
He dropped to one knee and slid an arm behind the man's back. "Sir? Can you hear me?"
The man's face was gray with pain. His breath came in short, broken pulls.
Behind Daniel, sharp heels struck the floor like warning shots.
Claudia Voss, the terminal operations supervisor, stormed toward them in a fitted black suit that looked too expensive for a place that smelled like coffee and jet fuel.
"Mind your own business and get back to work!" she snapped.
Daniel looked up at her, his jaw tight. "He needs help!"
Passengers had begun to stare. No one moved.
Daniel ignored Claudia. He helped the man up, step by shaky step, and guided him to a bench near the window. He twisted open a bottle of water from his cart and held it out.
The old man's hand trembled as he took it. Then he gripped Daniel's wrist with surprising strength.
"Thank you, son... God bless you."
"Just breathe, sir. Take your time."
Claudia folded her arms and let out a cold laugh. She yanked Daniel's ID badge off his chest so hard the plastic clip snapped. Then she threw it on the floor.
"You're fired. Clear your locker and get the hell out."
Daniel stared at his badge, then at her. His face burned, but he kept his voice steady.
"I did nothing wrong."
He turned and walked away before she could see how badly his hands were shaking.
On the bench, the old man sat up straight.
The weakness vanished from his face.
He pulled a phone from inside his jacket, pressed one number, and said in a voice made of steel, "Cancel Gate 12's lease... and bring the entire board here right now."
