She Grabbed the Waitress's Arm Over a Heart-Shaped Birthmark
CHAPTER 4 - THE LETTER CLAIRE NEVER SENT
"She came back for me?"
Claire Mercer lived in a small assisted-living apartment forty miles away.
By the time they arrived, night had fallen. Eleanor felt hollowed out, as if grief had shifted shape but not weight. She had not found the daughter she lost. Yet the young woman beside her had been stolen from someone too.
Claire was seventy now, frail after a stroke, but her mind was clear. When Lily walked in, wearing the silver locket outside her collar, Claire began to cry before anyone spoke.
"I always knew this day would come," she said.
Lily did not sit. "She came back for me?"
Claire nodded, shaking.
"Her name was Marisol Vega. She was nineteen. Alone. Terrified. She ran because she thought her father would kill her if he learned she'd given birth. When she returned, Anna panicked and told her the baby had been transferred to another hospital. By then..." Claire's voice broke. "By then I already had you."
Lily pressed a fist to her mouth.
Claire pointed to a wooden box on the table. Inside were old photographs, hospital bracelets, and a sealed envelope. On top lay the second matching locket half, the chain broken years ago and carefully wrapped in tissue.
Eleanor touched it and felt a strange ache. For years, the locket had symbolized only her loss. Now it held another woman's unfinished love.
Claire nodded toward the envelope. "I wrote to Marisol ten times. I never mailed them. I was selfish. I was afraid."
Lily opened the final letter with shaking hands. Inside was an address in Santa Fe and a newspaper clipping from eight years earlier. Marisol had opened a small bakery there.
"She's alive," Lily whispered.
Daniel stepped closer. "We can go tonight."
But Eleanor looked at Lily and understood the real choice before her. Lily had just lost one mother, found another in name only, and uncovered a life built on fear and theft.
No one could decide this for her.
Lily folded the letter carefully. "If I go, everything changes."
Eleanor reached for her hand, the one with the heart-shaped birthmark.
"Everything already has."
Then Claire clutched her chest and gasped for air.
