She Lost Her Job for a Burger, Then Heard One Chilling Phone Call

CHAPTER 1 - THE DINNER SHE GAVE AWAY

"Take this, sir. This was my dinner."

Emily Ross pushed through the door with a tray balanced in both hands. A burger. Fries. A cola. Her own employee meal.

She crouched beside him.

"Take this, sir. This was my dinner."

The old man turned to her slowly. His beard was gray and uneven. His eyes were tired, but clear. "What about you?"

Emily gave him the smile she used for frightened children and grieving widows and lonely regulars. "I'm not hungry."

That was a lie. She had worked a double shift and her hands were still shaking from it.

The man took the burger like it was made of glass. He had barely taken one bite when the restaurant door flew open.

Victor Hale, the floor manager, stormed into the rain.

"We don't feed people outside," he snapped.

Emily stood so quickly the tray rattled. "That's my dinner. I did nothing wrong."

Victor marched forward, grabbed the name tag from her blouse, and tore it off. "You're fired."

The old man stopped chewing. His whole face tightened with pain.

"You don't have to do this for me," he said softly. "I don't deserve it."

Emily's chin lifted. "I'd do it again."

For one strange second, the old man changed. The shrinking, guilty figure on the bench disappeared. He reached into the inside pocket of his ruined coat and pulled out a black smartphone.

Victor went still.

The old man pressed one number.

Then he said, in a cold and steady voice, "This is Walter Madden. I need to change the will."

Emily stared at him.

And from the doorway behind Victor, the restaurant owner whispered, "Dad?"
