The Child Who Recognized the Wolf Tattoo

CHAPTER 1 - THE WOLF ON THE SIDEWALK
"Mom, he has the same wolf as you!"
The little girl's voice rang out so brightly that for one strange second, nobody on the sidewalk moved.
Elena froze with her hand wrapped around her daughter Sofia's small fingers.
The man stepping out of the revolving door stopped so suddenly one of the guards behind him nearly walked into him.
He was tall, maybe thirty-eight, in a black suit that looked expensive without trying too hard. His dark brown hair curled slightly at the temples. A trimmed beard framed a face that had gone pale in an instant.
His eyes dropped to his right forearm.
Then back to Elena.
"What did you just say?" he asked.
His voice shook.
Sofia, only seven and suddenly unsure, pointed again at the edge of his sleeve where the ink showed. "The wolf," she whispered. "Like Mama's."
Elena's throat closed.
No. It can't be.
For thirteen years she had carried it like a wound and a promise.
The man's breathing turned shallow. He stepped closer, staring as if he were looking at a ghost.
Side by side, their arms looked impossible. Same fierce eyes in the wolf. Same curved line at the jaw. Same scar-shaped shadow under one ear.
Elena heard her own voice break.
"Luca gave me this design thirteen years ago."
The man's face shattered. His mouth opened, but for a second no words came out at all.
Then he whispered, "Luca... my brother?"
Elena could only stare.
Sofia pressed herself against Elena's coat, her white bow tilted now, her little backpack sliding off one shoulder.
The city noise seemed far away.
The man leaned in, all fear now, no pride.
"Was Luca her father?"
Elena's tears finally fell.
"Yes."
One of the guards took a step forward, then stopped when the man lifted a hand without looking back.
And then Elena saw something else.
On the man's left wrist, under the steel watch catching the daylight, was Luca's old leather bracelet.
She had buried Luca without it.
