He Told Their Son Mommy Was Dead, Then She Spoke His Name

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT THE FUNERAL HID

"I kept you alive by letting everyone believe you were dead."

Daniel was standing in Mara's kitchen, soaked at the shoulders, jaw tight.

Our old pastor, Reverend Cole, looked ten years older than I remembered.

Ethan sat at the table coloring in his blue jacket, humming to himself, blissfully unaware that the adults around him were breaking apart.

When Sophie stepped inside, Daniel went white.

For one second, nobody spoke.

Then he said, "You weren't supposed to come back here."

I lunged before I knew I had moved. Mara caught my arm. "Let him talk."

So he did.

Not like a villain. Not proudly. More like a man confessing to a fire he had failed to stop.

Daniel had gotten mixed up after his divorce and gambling debts. At first he only drove packages. Then he was helping men he should have feared. The night of the crash, he saw Sophie pull Lena from the passenger side, then watched another car approach. He knew the men inside. Knew they would kill Sophie for what she'd seen.

"So I took her," he said, voice shaking. "I got her out before they reached the bridge."

My stomach turned. "And let me bury a stranger?"

"The body was beyond recognition," Reverend Cole said softly. "The authorities relied on the dental file and the ring. Daniel told me there were dangerous men watching the family. He said if Sophie was declared alive, they would come for the child."

I looked at him in disbelief. "And you helped him hide this?"

The old man lowered his eyes. "I believed I was helping preserve life. I have asked God about that every day since."

Sophie spoke without looking at either of them. "He put me in a church shelter two states away. I worked under another name. I sent letters."

"What letters?" I asked.

Daniel flinched.

Mara crossed the kitchen and opened a drawer. "These?"

She held a bundle of envelopes tied with a rubber band. All addressed to me. All in Sophie's handwriting.

Daniel had kept every one.

Then his phone buzzed on the counter. He looked at it, and fear took the rest of the color from his face.

"They found out she's back."
