He Found His Parents Chained in the Basement on Christmas Eve

CHAPTER 2 - THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS

Sean rose slowly from the basement floor.

Every nerve in his body told him to break the lock, but his mother's warning rang louder than his own anger.

Don't open it.

Not can't.

Don't.

He climbed the stairs one step at a time, never taking his eyes off Vanessa. Up close, her makeup could not hide the strain around her mouth.

"What is this?" he asked.

Vanessa stepped back into the living room. Christmas music still played softly from a speaker near the tree, some bright old standard about sleigh bells and home. It made Sean want to tear the plug from the wall.

"It's not what you think," she said.

He almost laughed.

"My parents are chained in my basement."

"They are safe."

"Safe?" He pointed toward the stairs. "Safe people are not kept behind a locked gate with a water bottle and a metal bowl."

Vanessa swallowed. "Your mother was confused. She kept trying to leave. Your father can't stop her by himself. I was trying to protect them."

"By imprisoning them?"

She held out the folder. "Please. Read this first."

Sean did not take it.

The top page had his name typed neatly across the bottom line. There was a place for his signature. Another page beneath it bore the heading Durable Power of Attorney.

His stomach dropped.

"You wanted me to sign control of their care to you?"

"To us," Vanessa said quickly. "After we're married, it would help me manage things."

"Manage what?"

She hesitated.

That was answer enough.

Sean reached for the folder. Vanessa flinched but let him take it. Tucked inside was more than medical paperwork. There were bank statements. Insurance forms. A typed note about selling his parents' house "before further decline."

Further decline.

His father had good and bad days after the stroke. His mother was slower on stairs, forgetful when tired. But this language painted them as helpless.

Sean looked up. "Did they even know about this?"

Vanessa's silence turned the room cold.

Then Sean heard the front door open.

A man's voice called into the house.

"Sean? Your mother left me a message. She sounded terrified."

It was Daniel.

And he was holding Sean's spare house key.
