Thirteen Years After His Brother Vanished

CHAPTER 4 - THE TRUTH THEY BUILT A FAMILY AROUND

"No."

Margaret said it first, and with such force that it sounded almost like prayer.

Adrian replayed the clip.

Again.

And again.

His father, Charles Vale, had been dead for six years. A stroke, sudden and public, mourned by hundreds. He had been stern, difficult, controlling at times, but not a criminal. Not the man in a parking garage threatening his own son.

Except the voice was his.

Elena stood by the window, arms wrapped around herself. "Luca called me that night. He said if anything happened, I had to disappear. He begged me not to trust anyone in the company or in the family circle."

"In the family?" Margaret whispered.

Adrian looked at the records on the screen. Transfers from the foundation into offshore accounts. Charitable money. Children's clinics. Scholarship funds. Stolen.

His father had built his reputation on generosity.

His mother walked to the cabinet, took out a small key, and opened an old drawer Adrian had never seen her touch. She brought back a leather notebook.

"I found this after your father died," she said. "I told myself not to read it. Then I read enough to know there were things I didn't understand."

Inside were meeting notes, dates, amounts, and one page torn halfway through. At the bottom was a line in Charles's handwriting: Luca is emotional. Adrian is easier to manage.

Adrian felt sick.

"He didn't just lose Luca. He used me to bury him."

Margaret's face changed then, grief hardening into something older and steadier.

"He was protecting the family's name," she said, then shook her head as if ashamed of the instinct. "No. That's what I told myself my whole marriage. The truth is simpler. He was protecting himself."

Adrian looked toward the kitchen.

Sofia laughed softly at something on television.

A child. Luca's child.

Still here.

Still waiting for the adults to become honest.

"If we go to the police, this becomes public," Elena said. "Sofia's name will be in it. Reporters. Questions. I won't let her be torn apart."

Adrian understood. For the first time, he understood why Elena had stayed hidden.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel Mercer.

I heard Elena came to see you. If you want the full story about your brother, come alone.

Below it was an address by the river.

The same river where Luca had vanished.
