The Morning Sophie Slapped the Toast From His Hand
CHAPTER 2 - THE STORY THAT NEVER FIT
Sophie didn't move.
Neither did Daniel.
Melissa crossed the room too quickly, almost slipping on a shard of porcelain. "She's a child," she said. "She doesn't know what she's saying."
Sophie's chin lifted. "I heard you."
Daniel held up a hand before Melissa could answer. His heartbeat had turned slow and heavy, like a warning knock from inside his chest.
"What exactly did you hear?" he asked.
Sophie looked only at him. "On the phone. You said, 'If he keeps eating it, he won't ever try again.'"
Melissa made a broken sound. "That is not what I meant."
Daniel thought back over the past year. The pills. The powders stirred into yogurt. The special tea Melissa insisted would help his nerves. The way she always brought his breakfast herself.
The way she discouraged every second opinion.
He had called it devotion.
Now he wasn't sure what to call it.
Three years ago, after the crash, doctors had told him the spinal trauma was severe. Recovery was unlikely. He remembered pain, surgery, months of therapy, and then exhaustion so deep he had stopped hoping. Melissa had become his manager, driver, nurse, gatekeeper, everything.
At first, he had been grateful.
Then dependent.
Now terrified.
"Daniel," Melissa said softly, kneeling in front of him, "please don't do this based on a misunderstanding."
He looked at her and saw, for the first time, not control but fear.
"Which doctor told you I would never walk?" he asked.
She blinked. "Dr. Feldman."
Daniel's stomach turned.
Dr. Feldman had retired eighteen months ago.
He knew that because the clinic had mailed a notice. Melissa had told him it didn't matter. His case was settled anyway.
He looked at Sophie again. She was still gripping her cardigan.
Then the house phone rang in the kitchen.
Melissa went pale.
Daniel reached for his own cell on the table and saw three missed calls from an unknown number.
A voicemail notification flashed beneath them.
The preview read: This is Dr. Anita Ruiz. I reviewed your old scans, and we need to speak immediately.
