The Woman Outside the Diner Said She Died in the Fire
CHAPTER 3 - THE SISTER WHO STAYED CLOSE
"If you're lying, you're cruel. If you're telling the truth, my whole life is."
Daniel drove Noah to school in silence.
His son had cried when they separated from Sophie in the diner parking lot. Sophie had promised, with trembling hands and a voice full of tears, "I'll still be here when school ends, little bear." Noah had touched her scarred hand as if memorizing it.
Daniel had almost reached for her himself.
Instead, he drove straight to Amanda's house.
His younger sister opened the door in workout clothes, surprised but smiling. "You're early. Is Noah sick?"
Daniel held up the hospital paper.
The smile disappeared.
For one long second, neither of them spoke.
Then Amanda stepped back and said, "You'd better come in."
Her living room looked exactly as it always had. Cream sofa. Framed family photos. A knitted blanket Sophie had made years ago folded over the armchair. Daniel had seen that blanket a hundred times and never wondered how Amanda got it.
"Start talking," he said.
Amanda sat down slowly. "I found her before the hospital corrected the records. She was heavily sedated. Burned. Disoriented. She kept asking for Noah."
"Then why would you tell her I didn't want her?"
Amanda looked up at him, eyes already wet. "Because she was going to take Noah and leave."
Daniel's anger stalled. "What?"
"The night of the fire, I went to your house." Amanda twisted her hands together. "I came to ask for money. I was drowning in debt. You two were fighting in the kitchen. Sophie said she had accepted a job in Minnesota and wanted a trial separation. She said she'd take Noah for the summer."
Daniel remembered the fight. Bitter words. His own pride. The candle on the counter after the power flickered. The slamming of a door.
"I went outside," Amanda said. "I heard shouting. Then I smelled smoke. By the time I got back, flames were already at the curtains."
Daniel's stomach dropped. "Did you lock the door?"
"No." She said it fast, then slower. "I don't think so. I pulled it shut when I ran around back. The old latch stuck sometimes. You know that."
Daniel did know.
Too well.
Amanda covered her mouth. "When I saw Sophie alive at the hospital, I panicked. I thought if she came back, you'd lose Noah. I thought I was protecting you."
Daniel stepped away from her as if the room had become unsafe.
Then Amanda said the one thing that made him stop.
"Daniel... I wasn't the only one there that night. Your neighbor, Mr. Bennett, saw someone at the front door before the fire trucks came."
