The Ring the Boy Wouldn't Let Go
CHAPTER 2 - THE SON WHO KNEW
Daniel reached them before Arthur could stand.
"Father, not here," he said in a low, tight voice.
Arthur looked up sharply. Daniel was fifty-two, broad-shouldered, always controlled. He had organized tonight's charity gala down to the last folded napkin. But now his control looked strained, almost frightened.
The boy stepped back, pulling the ring against his chest.
Arthur rose slowly. "Do you know something?"
Daniel's jaw moved before words came. "I know this is not the place to do this."
"No," Arthur said. "That wasn't my question."
The security guard shifted awkwardly. A few guests had begun pretending not to watch. Arthur straightened his jacket and gave the guard a look that sent him away without another word.
"What's your name, son?" Arthur asked.
The boy's eyes stayed on Daniel. "Eli."
Arthur softened his voice. "Eli, did your mother ever tell you about her family?"
Eli shook his head. "She said it was just us."
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
Arthur saw it then. Not confusion. Recognition.
"You knew Caroline was alive," Arthur said.
Daniel took a breath. "I knew she had contacted the foundation office three years ago."
Arthur felt the floor tilt beneath him. "Three years?"
"She was sick," Daniel said quietly. "She asked for help, but she didn't want you involved."
Arthur stared at him. "And you decided that for me?"
Daniel glanced at Eli, then back at his father. "She made me promise."
Arthur wanted to shout. Instead, his voice dropped into something colder. "Where is she now?"
Eli answered before Daniel could.
"She's dead."
Silence folded around the three of them.
Eli's small hand tightened over the blue ring. "She died in March."
Arthur's grief had barely found shape when Eli added, through another tremble of breath, "But before she died, she wrote a letter to you."
Daniel looked at the boy so suddenly that Arthur caught it.
And in that look was a second secret.
"Before she died, she wrote a letter to you."
