She Kicked the Toolbox of the Man Who Owned the Hotel

CHAPTER 1 - THE INTERVIEW IS OVER
"Hey! Move your junk."
The words snapped across the hotel entrance like a slap.
Evelyn Parker stood in her camel coat, resume folder tucked tight under her arm, glaring at the open toolbox blocking part of the glass door. Without waiting, she nudged it hard with the toe of her boot.
He had been crouched near the door, checking the closer at the top frame. His dark work clothes were worn and dusty at the cuffs. He picked up the screwdriver, dragged the toolbox neatly against the wall, and made room for her.
Then he looked at the folder in her arm.
"Here for the interview?"
His tone was calm, almost polite.
Evelyn took one look at his sleeves and felt her jaw tighten. She had driven forty miles in a borrowed car, slept badly, and spent her last twenty dollars on gas. She was in no mood to be questioned by maintenance.
"None of your business," she said. "Just do your job."
Something in his face changed. Not anger. Just distance.
He closed the toolbox with a clean click and stood.
Before Evelyn could step inside, the glass door opened. A sharply dressed staff member came out, smiling.
Evelyn straightened at once and shifted her folder into both hands.
But the man in the suit looked past her.
"Mr. Hayes, shall I bring her in?"
Her smile died.
She turned slowly to the man beside her.
He took off his work gloves. His expression stayed unreadable.
"You're the owner?" she asked.
He held her gaze for one long second.
"The interview is over."
Then he turned and walked toward the door.
Evelyn froze, then hurried after him, panic rising in her throat.
"Wait!"
He paused just inside the lobby, one hand on the glass door, but he still did not look back.
Then a little girl ran across the lobby and threw her arms around his waist.
"Dad, is she the lady from Mom's letter?"
