She Said His Father Was Dead and Slammed the Door|

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT HIS FATHER BOUGHT WITH SILENCE

Eli drove straight from the garage to his daughter's house.

Sadie opened the door with her baby on one hip and a dish towel over her shoulder. At thirty-two, she still had the same wide gray eyes she had worn in the graduation photo. The sight of her nearly undid him.

"Dad? What happened?"

He sat at her kitchen table and laid the photograph, the deed, and the hospital bill in front of her.

She read in silence. Then she pressed her lips together.

"You knew?" Eli asked.

Sadie lowered her eyes. "Not at first. Mom told me insurance had covered more than it did. But when I turned eighteen, Grandpa George came to see me."

Eli stared at her.

"He came here?"

"At the apartment I had back then. He brought soup in a cooler and acted like he was delivering auto parts." A sad smile touched her face. "He was terrible at pretending."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Sadie looked up then, hurt and steady at the same time. "Because you hated him. And because he asked me not to until he found the right way to tell you himself."

Eli stood and walked to the sink, gripping the edge.

Every year he had called his father a coward in his heart.

Every year George had been helping his child stay alive.

When he turned back, Sadie said softly, "He loved you, Dad. He just didn't know how to cross all the damage."

That evening Eli returned to the house on Mercer Lane with the deed in his pocket.

Vanessa opened the door only a crack.

"I told you not to come back."

Eli held up the paper. "You can stop pretending this place is yours."

Her face changed. Not guilt. Fear.

She let him in.

The living room still smelled like his father's pipe tobacco beneath her floral candles. Eli's chest ached.

Vanessa sank into a chair. "He wasn't supposed to leave that to you."

"Joint ownership is public record. Why are you scared?"

She looked toward the hallway, toward George's old bedroom.

Then she said, very quietly, "Because your father didn't hide the safe to cheat me. He hid it because someone has been trying to force me out too."

A truck door slammed outside.

Vanessa turned white.

"They're here," she whispered. "My son found out George changed the deed."
